Under-bed storage boxes and bags for low beds and small bedrooms

This is the box most UK bedrooms already have one of, and there is a reason. What More UK moulds it in Britain to 60 × 40 × 18 cm, which is the lowest a rigid 32-litre box gets here, and the base has integral sliders — raised runners — so a full box comes out from under a slatted bed without you lifting the frame.

The proportions suit a standard double: two boxes side by side across the width of the bed, or three end to end down its length, still leave the middle free. The lid clips on all round and is clear, like the body, so you see what is inside without opening anything. That is a convenience and a small drawback: a bedroom full of visible clutter looks like a bedroom full of clutter.

The one thing to check before ordering is the pack. The listing title says a set of five; one of the listing bullets says ten. Both may have been true at different times, so confirm the quantity on the live page. Five boxes at 1.1 kg each is also more plastic than a single bed needs — if you want two, look at the single-box listings or the Really Useful below.

Sliders are not wheels. On boards or laminate they glide; on a deep carpet a full box drags, and that is exactly what the wheeled version fixes.

Same footprint, same 32 litres, same British maker, three changes that matter in use. Wheels instead of sliders, so the box rolls out over carpet. A folding split lid, hinged in the middle, so you lift one half and take out a jumper without pulling the whole box out from under the bed. And a cool grey lid, which hides the contents — the opposite trade-off to the clear Crystal.

The cost is height: 18.5 cm for the body, and the wheels sit under it, so measure a low frame with the wheels in mind rather than the quoted figure. At 1.38 kg a box it is a little heavier than the Crystal, which you will not notice under a bed.

What More UK says the boxes stack when in use and nest when empty, so a set of five that you are not using yet takes up one box’s worth of cupboard. The split lid is the reason to choose this over the Crystal: if the things under your bed are ones you reach for every week — gym kit, the second duvet, spare towels — opening half a lid beats hauling out a box.

The Really Useful 50 L is a different proposition: one box instead of five, 71 cm long and 44 cm wide, with 23 cm of height that buys you 50 litres. The manufacturer publishes the internal space too — 60.5 × 37 × 20 cm — which is the figure you actually need when you are wondering whether a folded winter coat or a boxed set fits.

Its lid is the reason people buy the brand: the handles swing up and lock over the lid, so a full box can be carried by them without the lid coming off. Really Useful lists under-bed storage as one of the box’s intended uses, and it stacks, so two of them in a cupboard behave.

The trade-offs are all about that height and weight. At 23 cm it needs the most clearance of anything here — a slatted bed with 25 cm or more, not a low frame. It has no wheels or sliders, and at 2.6 kg empty it is a two-handed lift once full. It is sold singly, which is right for this size: one of these holds what two of the Wham boxes hold.

When the gap is 15 or 16 cm, no rigid box on this page fits, and this is where the fabric drawers earn their place. The SONGMICS pair is 82 cm long, 40 cm wide and 15 cm high — long enough to reach well under a double bed — with a transparent zipped lid and a Velcro divider that lets you keep summer and winter apart in one drawer.

It is not a box. The walls and base are fabric stiffened with 2 mm cardboard, which keeps the shape when you slide it, but it will not take weight on top and it should not live in a damp room. The 82 cm length also needs checking against the depth of your bed: on a small double it will stick out at the foot.

Every figure above comes from the listing. SONGMICS’s own page could not be reached when this was checked, so treat the dimensions as the seller’s until confirmed. Folded flat, the pair disappears into a wardrobe when not needed, which no rigid box can do.

The Lifewit trio is the softest option here and the easiest to move: each bag is 60 × 45 × 15 cm, 40 litres, with four reinforced handles — two on the front, two on the sides — so it comes out with one hand from either direction. A clear front window shows what is inside without unzipping.

The fabric is non-woven and breathable, which suits towels, T-shirts and bedding, and each bag folds down to 26 × 22 × 10 cm when empty. Three bags is a full set for a double bed with the middle left clear.

Being soft-sided is also the limit. Stack anything on a bag and it sags; shoes or anything with corners will show through the fabric; and there is no seal against dust, only a zip. As with the SONGMICS, the dimensions and the 40-litre figure are the listing’s own — Lifewit is a marketplace brand without a reachable manufacturer page — so they are marked as pending in the table.

A spare duvet does not fit in any box on this page, and it is the single bulkiest thing most small bedrooms need to hide. Two cautions. Down and feather fillings are not meant to stay compressed for months — check the care label before you flatten a good duvet. And these are bags, not boxes: nothing protects the contents from a knock or a heel, so they belong under the bed or on top of a wardrobe, not on a floor you walk across. They are reusable; the seal is the part to look after.
