Bagsmart or Gonex compression cubes? Five mesh cubes and a shoe bag against four big, light ones
Both sets squash clothes with a second zip, and both are sold for cabin bags and suitcases. Bagsmart gives you five cubes and a shoe bag with mesh fronts and label pockets; Gonex gives you four opaque rip-stop nylon cubes up to 44 × 33 cm at 340 g for the lot. Which suits you depends on the bag you pack, how many people's clothes go in it, and whether you need to see inside.

Bagsmart states its sizes in inches; the centimetres here are converted. Bagsmart does not state a weight, so the 650 g in the table is the listing’s figure and is marked as needing a check. Gonex states its weight but not its litres, denier or warranty.

Bagsmart’s set is built for finding things. Every cube has a mesh panel, so you see the contents without opening it, and a clear label pocket, so a card saying “Tom” or “Wednesday” ends the rummaging in a shared suitcase. Bagsmart gives the large cube as 15 × 10.5 × 6 inches — about 38 × 27 cm, 15 cm deep expanded and about 4.5 cm compressed — the two mediums as 33 × 23 cm and the two smalls as 33 × 13 cm. The sixth piece is a drawstring bag for shoes or laundry. The fabric is polyester; the warranty is 30 days limited.
Strengths
- Compression and mesh together — flat and see-through
- Label pockets for family packing
- Five cubes plus a shoe or laundry bag
Limitations
- 30-day warranty
- Polyester rather than nylon; weight from the listing
- The parent listing defaults to a two-piece set — check the six-piece is selected
Good for
- a week in a cabin bag
- families
- anyone who packs by outfit

Gonex’s set is built for squashing. There are four opaque rip-stop nylon cubes in four sizes — extra-large 44 × 33 × 9 cm, large 37 × 27 × 9, medium 30 × 22.5 × 9 and small 25 × 19 × 8 — each with a second zip that compresses the contents, and the whole set weighs 340 g by Gonex’s figure. The listing adds volumes for three of the cubes, 1.9, 3.8 and 5.9 litres for the small, medium and large; Gonex does not state litres, so we mark those as the listing’s. There is no mesh, and Gonex states no warranty.
Strengths
- Four sizes up to 44 × 33 cm — the XL takes jumpers
- Compression zip on every cube; 340 g for the set
- Rip-stop nylon, thirteen colours
Limitations
- Opaque — no mesh to see contents
- Gonex states no litres, denier or warranty
- The XL is too big for a 40 × 30 × 20 cabin bag laid flat
Good for
- a medium suitcase
- bulky clothes
- colour-coding family packing
Look elsewhere if
- a 40 × 30 × 20 under-seat bag (use S and M only)
- seeing what is inside without opening
Sizes against the bag you own
The cube sizes decide more than the brand does. In a free under-seat bag of 40 × 30 × 20 cm — Ryanair’s and Wizz Air’s free size, and inside easyJet’s 45 × 36 × 20 — a cube has to be under about 38 × 28 cm to lie flat.
- Bagsmart: the mediums and smalls fit with room; the large, at about 38 × 27 cm, just about does.
- Gonex: the small and medium fit easily; the large at 37 × 27 cm just about; the extra-large at 44 × 33 cm does not.
In a medium suitcase both sets fit whole, and Gonex’s extra-large becomes the reason to buy it: 44 × 33 cm takes folded jumpers and jeans that Bagsmart’s biggest cube would need two goes at.
Weight
The difference is larger than the piece count suggests. Gonex’s four cubes weigh 340 g by Gonex’s own figure. Bagsmart’s six pieces weigh 650 g by the listing’s figure — Bagsmart states none. Some of that is the extra cube and the shoe bag; some is the mesh and polyester. On a cabin allowance of 10 kg it is a third of a kilogram either way. On a free under-seat bag with no stated weight limit it hardly matters, but a light traveller notices it.
Compression in practice
Both sets compress with a second zip around the cube. Bagsmart gives a figure: 15 cm deep expanded, about 4.5 cm compressed, on the large cube. Gonex gives the cubes’ depth, 8 to 9 cm, and says they compress, without a compressed figure. Compression makes clothes flatter, not lighter, and a hard-packed cube is a brick that does not mould into the corners of a soft bag. Pack to the shape of the bag, not to the limit of the zip.
Material and the long run
Rip-stop nylon, Gonex’s choice, is woven to stop a small tear spreading. Polyester with mesh, Bagsmart’s, is the more common combination and the mesh is the part that sees wear first. Neither maker offers a warranty you could plan around: Bagsmart’s is 30 days, Gonex’s is not stated. If you want a set to last a decade, our packing-cubes roundup has the warranty-led option.

Do compression cubes let you pack more?
They let you pack the same clothes into less depth. Bagsmart gives its large cube as 15 cm deep expanded and about 4.5 cm compressed; Gonex gives its cubes as 8 to 9 cm deep with a compression zip. The clothes weigh exactly the same, so on airlines with a weight limit on the cabin bag, compression helps you fit the bag's shape, not its allowance.
Which set fits a 40 × 30 × 20 cm under-seat bag?
Neither set fits whole. Bagsmart's medium (33 × 23 cm) and small (33 × 13 cm) cubes lie flat in a 40 × 30 bag; its large, at about 38 × 27 cm, just about does. Gonex's small (25 × 19) and medium (30 × 22.5) fit easily and the large (37 × 27) just about; the extra-large at 44 × 33 cm does not lie flat. Take the smaller cubes for the cabin bag and leave the rest for the suitcase.
Mesh or opaque cubes?
Mesh lets you see what is inside and lets damp things breathe; Bagsmart's cubes have mesh panels. Opaque cubes hide the contents, which some travellers prefer, and are usually a little lighter; Gonex's are opaque rip-stop nylon. If more than one person's clothes share a suitcase, Bagsmart's clear label pockets solve the same problem as mesh in a different way.
What warranty do they have?
Bagsmart states a 30-day limited warranty. Gonex states none on its page that we could find, so we mark it as not stated. Neither is a long-term promise, and for a set you expect to last years Eagle Creek's warranty, covered in our packing-cubes roundup, is the different proposition.
